Money is tight right now and businesses across the United States are trying to survive the financial woes that plague the economy. Each business decision has a dollar amount attached and with businesses watching every dollar spent, it is often wise to optimize expenses. Business owners and managers continuously ask themselves if they are getting the greatest benefit from any dollar spent. Discretionary spending is only used judiciously as companies hope the worst of the financial recession is behind us. Looking for signs of a strengthening economy is an obsession for business owners and managers. This Christmas season, bonuses were forgone and the idea of a Christmas bonus was put on hold as employees just hoped for continued employment. Business owners and managers put off raises and retirement planning matching in an effort to keep employees working and worked to cut costs in non-employee related areas. Each year, clients and customers were sent corporate Christmas cards but not last year. Last year, a Christmas card was attached to a newsletter and year end summary of business operations in an effort to combine client and customer communications.

Companies are looking at every opportunity to cut costs. Reducing employee benefits and freezing raises were just a few of the strategies to reduce expenditures. Businesses cut travel budgets and advertising budgets in order to save money. For the first time in decades, companies were freezing hiring and laying off people at a rapid rate. While companies took these actions seriously, they were chopping budget items in order to keep as many people employed as possible while trying to optimize revenues during the unprecedented recession. Keeping the business afloat was the number one priority of managers and business owners last year. Who could imagine spending any extra money on something as trivial as corporate Christmas cards? Making the decision to spend money is done when only necessary.

The idea of continuing to communicate with clients and customers was a motivating factor for companies sending out corporate Christmas cards at the end of 2009. With so much uncertainty permeating the markets, it was an opportunity for companies to let their clients and customers know the state of the business. Communicating new business strategies and sharing success stories provided an opportunity for businesses to boast and assure people they are still doing well regardless of the recession. Keeping in contact with customers and clients even during the worst of times is a business imperative for customer driven organizations. The customers and clients who stop hearing from their vendors are more likely to bring their business to other companies, especially if they are uncertain about the businesses viability.

As a result of sending out these communications, how many customers contacted the office afterwards? Does the communication expense outweigh the knowledge that communications can stimulate inquires thus resulting in business? The importance of keeping in contact with the clients and customers can be reviewed when the business communications and corporate Christmas cards are sent out. Any action that encourages customers and clients’ communications with the office can generate business. If you can attribute some incremental revenue as a result of client and customer communications then it is worth the expense. While companies are eliminating any expense that doesn’t directly result in revenue, being the company that a client receives communications from can be a factor in retaining business.

As 2010 unfolds, companies will still watch their expenditures and continue the cost cutting initiatives from 2009. As companies begin to feel themselves on solid ground, they will reinstate business practices once considered standard. From granting raises to sending out corporate Christmas cards, 2010 should bring better financial news and, with it, improved financial results for the coming year.
